With Evicted, part of the BBC's No Home season, Bafta-winning film-maker Brian Woods has compiled a powerful indictment of the effects of homelessness on children, told in their own words. Through no fault of their own, children are the helpless, hapless victims of fate. They move from hostel to hostel, bed and breakfast to bed and breakfast, often at mere minutes' notice. They miss school and cannot forge friendships. If they do go to school, often they are bullied. Young Charlotte, whose family lives a dreadful hand-to-mouth existence, recalls how she was called "a dirty, homeless tramp" by a fellow pupil. With no home, children have no room to call their own and, worse, often exist on bad or inadequate food. One contributor, sweet teenager Sarah, talks almost matter of factly about how she heats up tins of beans and sausage on the radiator of her B&B all day, in the hope they'll be warm enough to eat when she gets home at night. Her cheerful acceptance of her lot will break your heart.
